Stephen

Name meaning: "Crown" (Greek)
Approximately 6 references

One of the seven men appointed to serve the early church in Jerusalem (Acts 6:1-6), Stephen was singled out as "full of faith and the Holy Spirit." When hauled before the Sanhedrin, he delivered a sweeping recital of Israel's history and leveled the charge that its leaders had always resisted the Spirit — an accusation that cost him his life. He became the first Christian martyr, dying under a hail of stones while praying, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Saul of Tarsus stood watching.
